The old Tibetans that we aim to support are generally alone here in India, without family or means of support. Most of them were forced to leave their families behind when they fled from Tibet. Among them are many monks who were forced to join the army on arrival in India and, upon retirement, had no family to return to. Some of them receive a small amount of money from the Tibetan Government, but even though they are extremely frugal, the money is not sufficient to cover necessities such as accommodation, food and medical costs. In some cases, the beneficiaries are not old enough to be a grandparent but they have been included due to the severity of their situation. The “Adopt a Grandparent” project aims to give them the extra money to get by. It relies on regular donations from benefactors, most of whom live overseas. When they “adopt” someone, it means that they agree to support that person financially for the rest of their lives. Sponsors make regular payments to the school which are passed in full to their adopted grandparents. This web site presents a small sample of some of the people who are currently looking for sponsors. The Charity is happy to provide people with regular progress reports on their new grandparents. Many benefactors actually come to visit their grandparents in person which is how they come to appreciate what a profound effect their support has had. They are always warmly received because the support they give allows the old people to live out the rest of their lives in dignity and self respect. |
