English Language Classes

The Tibet Charity Education Center offers free English language classes to newcomers from Tibet and to those already residing in India, who were unable to get a formal education. English helps them to compete in the Indian job market or pursue higher education in India or abroad. Often, Tibetan is the only other language spoken by the students.

Every year there will be two academic sessions:
  • March 15 – July 31
  • August 1 – December 15

Classes will be taught at the following levels:

  • Beginners
  • Elementary
  • Pre-intermediate
  • Intermediate, and
  • Upper Intermediate

Classes are currently programmed for 2 hour slots:
9 am – 11 am
11 am – 1 pm
2 pm – 4 pm

Each class has between 15 and 20 students

Course Books and Syllabi

The Tibet Charity Education Center runs a “Super Beginner’s” course for students who have never studied English before and are unfamiliar with the English alphabet. For those beginners with a little more knowledge the Center conducts a “Beginners” course as well. These beginners’ courses are designed to prepare students for the New English File elementary book.

Courses from Elementary and above follow the New English File series. Teachers and students are provided with comprehensive study and support material. The books incorporate the full range of activities that students need, including grammar, listening reading comprehension exercises, and communicative activities. The teacher’s books provide detailed lesson plans and copy ready supplementary material.

New students are required to take a placement test and progress to a higher level based on end of term exams.

The Teachers

The beginner's courses are taught by native Tibetan speakers who can provide the extra translation support needed at the Starter level.

Classes from the Elementary level on are taught by native English speakers who work as volunteers. Most of them arrange their teaching schedule with Tibet Charity before they arrive but sometimes teachers are recruited from the visiting population of the town.

Teachers are generally qualified and experienced within the field of teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Teachers have always found working at Tibet Charity deeply rewarding. This year we introduced a first rate course book complete with teacher's books that makes the classroom experience more enjoyable and keeps preparation time down to a minimum. The students are always friendly with more enthusiasm and appreciation than you could imagine and a respect for learning and for teachers that is inspiring and uplifting.
