TCEC Closes for winter vacation

Tibet Charity Education Centre closes for winter vacation from the 16th of December 2009 till 15th March 2010.

A small closing function was held in the morning of the day which was attended by the students, volunteers and the staff of Tibet Charity India.

During the function, we were all thrilled to hear two of the students who have started as a student in the lower lever classes giving a speech in English in front of the audience. They explained how the English classes here have helped them in facing the world with greater confidence. They have said that learning of English has given them the access to wider knowledge. They have now access to writings of great writers on wide ranging topics. They can now express their feelings to their friends from outside. They can now travel around India with little difficulty. They expressed their appreciation to Tibet Charity in general and the volunteers from past and present for being very good and dedicated teachers for them.

The teachers too expressed how much they have enjoyed their time here with the students here who they think

are the best students they have ever come across in their lives. All of them expressed their desire to come back and work for Tibet Charity again.

Mrs. Tsering Lhamo educated the students on health matters and how they need to keep themselves healthy during their vacation.

The Director thanked the teachers for spending their time for the students here and he congratulated the students for the progress they have been able to make during their time here with us. He also explained some of the changes we intend to make from the new session next year. He wished them all a very happy new year and happy vacation.

Thereafter the students acquiring position in the exam were given special prizes and the rest of the students were given certificates for successfully completing one year of English lesson with us. The teachers were given Khatas (white Tibetan scarf) and Certificates of Appreciation for the time they have spent with us.

The function was followed by some fun programs which saw participation by all the students, volunteers and the staff of Tibet Charity. A special lunch was also arranged on the day.

With this we have successfully completed one year of TCEC in the service of all those desirous of learning English and computers. We thank all the staff, volunteers, well-wishers and the staff for making it a successful year for TCEC.

Special mention must be given of TC Sweden for kindly funding the administrative needs of TCEC and for sponsoring some of the textbooks. We also thank SHAT (Holland) and IFTIP (Israel) for funding remaining textbooks for our classes.

The last Dinner meeting of Tibet Charity Education Centre conducted

Director Addressing the Meeting.

The last dinner meeting of the staff of Tibet Charity Education Centre, including the volunteer teachers, was organised on 20th November 2009.

The meeting discussed various issues related to the functioning of Tibet Charity Education Centre. The main focus of the discussion was to make the classes more efficient from the next academic session in 2010.

It was decided to divide the current session of four and half months into two parts so that opportunities can be provided to the new students desirous of joining the classes here in case there is a drop in the class strength at the end of the first part of the session.

Thank you Ms Katja Schultz

This is also done as four and half months’ session was found to be too long to maintain the interest of the students.

A decision was also made to make some changes in the way placement test is conducted so that right students can be placed in the right class. The pass percentage has been raised to 60% from the present 50%.

It was also decided to add Saturday activities which shall include students’ activities and which shall also include talks on various topics related to Tibetan culture, religion and administration in exile.

After fruitful discussion, a dinner was served to the volunteers where we also bid farewell to Ms Katja Schultz who worked as volunteer vet with for us almost three months.

An Inverter added to Tibet Charity Computer Class

Frequent power failures, especially during monsoon, has made things very difficult for our computer classes to go undisturbed. Sometimes when we had no power for hours at a stretch, we had no choice but to close the class. This didn’t please many especially after these students have come all the way from various parts of Dharamsala to attend the free computer classes here. Having to go back with no class at all did become irritating sometimes.

But thanks to Anne – Lise Hedegaard and Pia Lakha from Denmark, we now have an inverter that is able to carry the full load of the computers we have in the computer section for hours when there is a power failure. We now need not worry about power failures any more.

This kind act of theirs has made the computer classes much more efficient and worry free.

We thank them for their kind assistance.

The new session of Tibet Charity Education Center begins

Starting from 16th of March 2009, the new session of Tibet Charity Education Center begins with a formal inaugural session on the day.

Besides the staff of Tibet Charity India, the inaugural session was attended by the volunteers and the students numbering over 180.

After Miss Rinzin Wangmo, our coordinator for TCEC welcomed all the students and the volunteers alike to TCEC, volunteers took turn to introduce themselves and also expressed their happiness for being able to join TCEC as its volunteers. They felt that they will have much more to learn than what they can offer as teachers.

The Director then read out the general rules and regulations governing TCEC and urged all the students to abide by them. He stressed the need to keep the surrounding clean and to make the best use of the opportunity that they are provided with. He thanked the

volunteers for coming from places so far away to be of some help to the students here. He also thanked the vets for joining us and appreciated the great role they play in keeping the animals here in the region in good health.

The day concluded with a simple welcome dinner party to the volunteers.

Like last year this year too we had to turn many students away due to lack of seats available in the classes. The growing interest of the students to attend the classes here speaks a lot on the image we have been able to build through the years. The credit therefore goes to all the volunteers who have worked with us in the past as well as of now. We thank all for their wonderful contribution.
